Majid Al Futtaim, the Dubai-based shopping mall developer, announced plans on Sunday to launch a new supermarket brand based on the popular Carrefour name.
The company, which has the sole franchisee of Carrefour hypermarkets in the region, said it would launch its debut Carrefour City – The Neighboring Store project next month in Dubai, a smaller sized, neighbourhood store.
“Carrefour City brings the best loved aspects of Carrefour to a convenient corner store concept easily accessible to customers around the city,” the company said in a statement.
With up to 4,000 products on the shelves for daily and weekly shopping needs and a broad range of fresh food, ready to eat meals and snacks, Carrefour City would offer a “quick and easy shopping experience”, it added.
“The Carrefour City model, a best practice started in France, is developed to answer to the daily shopping needs of the residential & business communities with a focus on fresh food, beverages, groceries and dairy products,” said Franck Rouquet, vice president Majid Al Futtaim Carrefour Market UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain.
The first Carrefour City will open in November in collaboration with RTA Metro, with a plan to expand nationwide.
Majid Al Futtaim reported that group revenue rose 14 percent to AED12.8 billion ($3.5 billion) in the first half of 2014 compared to the same period last year.
